Everything is a segment
Segment, measure, derived claim. Only two may render as a count.
I stopped building reports and built the primitives underneath them. A segment is who, a measure is what is actually true, a derived claim is what we think it means. The separation between the three is the whole discipline.
I was shipping the business back to itself, one chart at a time.
THREE PRIMITIVES
Who, what, what we think
A segment is a stored query with a definition, a source and a known error. A measure is what is actually true about that segment. A derived claim is interpretation. Only the first two are ever allowed to render as a counted number.
THE EMPTY SLOT
Reasoning is deferred
A model output once got promoted into a measure and displayed in the typography of a count. Same font, same weight, same authority as something we had actually counted. Nothing on the page told you one of them was a guess. So the derived slot sits empty by decision, and reasoning comes back when the floor can hold it.
SEE ASK ACT
There is no fourth
A segment supports three things. See it, ask it, act on it. Once the segment is defined correctly the report, the audience, the workflow, the email, the churn model and the paid-media targeting all fall out of it. That changed the entire build.
